  1. Get to the root of the problem: Sleep meds don’t address the cause of insomnia, even though they do help you get sleep today.  If you use over the counter sleep meds, they will work, and you can address issues with side effects with your doctor, but you won’t be solving the puzzle of the “why” behind your sleep disturbance.  Is it melatonin?  Is it sugar crashes?  Is it some other cause?

Get up at the same time every morning: Waking up with the sun, at the same time every day, and without an alarm clock is the perfect way to start the day.  People think that going to bed at the same time every night is key, but I find that getting up at the same time every morning is the consistency that

Get a good breakfast: It sounds like a platitude, but sleep and food both address how your metabolism will function.  Sleeping well is connecting to eating well.  In the morning, focus on getting plenty of starchy foods with low moisture.  This is why pancakes and waffles are not only popular to start of the day, but are craved for a reason!  You body needs the energy from these kinds of foods in the morning, so your energy doesn’t crash in the late morning or early afternoon, leaving you hyper but tired in the evening.
  4. Get into bed when you feel the first wave of sleepiness hit you:  After the sun goes down, pay attention to when your body is getting tired.  Is it 8pm? 9pm? 10pm?  Maybe your body is telling you that it’s natural sleepiness is at 9pm, but you are so used to thinking of “bedtime” as 10pm, that you miss the cues.  Listen to your body!
