Drink of the Week: The Perfect Cosmopolitan

Drink of the Week: The Perfect Cosmopolitan

Whether you found your first cosmopolitan as a result of a certain TV show set in New York City, or you have been a fan since before they came into vogue, this pink drink is all it’s cracked up to be.  Cosmos are one of the most drinkable cocktails around, and the flavors are simple and clean.

But if you order a Cosmopolitan at a bar or restaurant, chances are the ingredients are not the cleanest around.  Alcohol manufacturers are not required to label added dyes and flavors, so you can never be sure that you are drinking something without a little extra “something” that doesn’t qualify as real food at all!

Good thing I have figured out how to make clean cocktails, huh?  Yep!

Equipment Needed:

The Perfect Cosmopolitan (from Real Cocktails)

1 1/2 ounces Citrus Vodka* (how to make citrus vodka)
1/2 ounce Light Orange Liqueur** (how to make light orange liqueur)
1/4 ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce cranberry juice
flamed orange peel, for garnish, preferably organic

Shake all the ingredients together, then pour into a cocktail glass. Flame the orange peel*** over the surface of the drink, then garnish with the orange peel.

*Citrus Vodka is homemade Citron vodka (see how to make your own
**Light Orange Liqueur is homemade Cointreau

***Flaming an orange peel means to cut a piece of orange peel about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide, and then bending it, peel side facing the drink, so the essential oils from the peel shoot through the flame of a match and become toasted before they land on the surface of the cocktail (as shown in the picture)
