Homemade Taco Seasoning

I love taco seasoning!  Especially when I get pounds and pounds of grass-fed ground beef that I use throughout the year.  And since I grew up in California and now live in Arizona, you’d better believe that I love me some Mexican food.

I use this taco seasoning not just on ground beef, but ground turkey as well.  It’s perfect for making tacos, burrito bowls, tostadas, and even flavored sour cream!  I use about two tablespoons of taco seasoning for 2 cups of sour cream and we use it all the time to flavor various Mexican dishes we make.  

Do you know what’s in a packet of taco seasoning from the store?  If you buy the most popular brand, the ingredient list may not be quite as bad as the label I discussed in my onion soup mix post, but it still isn’t the most ideal:


First of all, you don’t know what the other “spices” are, and this can actually be a clever disguise for chemicals and MSG-containing additives.  The whey is most assuredly oxidized from processing, and the salt and sugar used are bleached, cheap versions of their whole counterparts: sea salt and whole cane sugar.

Plus, I don’t even add sugar to my spice mix and I don’t miss it!  Last but not least, the citric acid is yet another clever cover for MSG.  And as I said before, none of these ingredients are organic, so many may be genetically modified and tainted with pesticides.

Taco Seasoning

1/2 cup dried minced onion, or onion powder
1/4 cup chili powder
1/4 cup sea salt
1/8 cup garlic powder
1/8 cup ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
(buy organic spices, sea salt, and pepper here)

  1. Put all the ingredients in a pint mason jar, shaking to combine.

Use about 2-3 tablespoons for a pound of ground meat.  Use 2 tablespoons to flavor 2 cups of sour cream.  Enjoy!

    Can you use Chili pepper instead of Cayenne? My 17 year old is severely allergic to Cayenne Pepper.

  2. Good stuff, homemade is the only way to go… I’ve been experimenting with making homemade taco shells out of wild rice as well… Haven’t perfected it yet 🙂

    This is a GREAT recipe! We used it for tacos last week and my kids gobbled it up. I’ve been looking for a good mix of spices for a while and this fits the bill – so much that for movie night I surprised the kids with popcorn sprinkled with it. They LOVE it! Thanks 🙂

  4. The same can be used to make chili, too. Add a couple of Tbls of Arrowroot to it for thickening. Quite yummy.
