The Headache Cure, Part One: Minerals

Natural Remedies for Headaches that REALLY WORK! Part One: Minerals | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS

Headaches can present in a kaleidoscope of ways, and the underlying causes can be even more numerous.  There are cluster headaches, tension headaches, migraines, and more, not to mention more rare forms like chronic or exercise headaches, plus secondary headaches that branch out from an underlying condition like an infection, or panic attacks (source). But the variety of possible types and causes can be boiled down to one common root: headaches are painful.

And depending on the type of headache and the underlying cause, you can sometimes find relief with the simplest of natural remedies before you ever have to reach for a bottle of acetaminophen or make a doctor’s appointment. Why go through all that trouble when a simple pinch of salt, capsule of probiotics, or a few drops of essential oil will do the trick?  My philosophy is that when faced with an ailment, natural remedies should be the first course of action to consider.

So…let’s look at all the possible natural remedies in five parts!  Today’s topic: minerals.  Later installments will also discuss essential oils, body tension release, pain relief, and digestion. [Read more…]

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Produce Wash for Fresh Fruit

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Wash for Fresh Fruit | OUR NOURISHING ROOTSI love honeycrisp apples.  That’s how this whole thing started.  I went to the store this morning, and there were all these beautiful, crispy, slightly tart and slightly sweet honeycrisp apples, and none of them were organic.  Nooo!

Fortunately, I was still able to buy the non-organic honeycrisp apples, because I know that I can take them home and cleanse them with my homemade natural apple cider vinegar produce wash.  It helps to remove pesticides, wax, and any other nasties that get added to conventional fruits. 3 Weird Ways to Get Rid of a Cold

3 Weird Ways To Get Rid of a Cold

I love to use natural remedies at home to combat infection, sickness, and colds at home.  If I can help it, I like to keep out family home, getting good rest, and avoiding doctor’s offices and over the counter medicines.  I think fevers should burn whenever possible!

I have written my go to 18 ways to kick a cold here.  They work for us, and we use them again and again.

But what about some new and unusual remedies?  In the last year I have done a lot of reading about metabolism and how to lower stress and increase energy.  The same principles apply when you are sick.  Maybe even more so!

How to Treat Hives: Naturally!

How to Treat Hives Naturally | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS #essentialoils #herbs #holistichealth #naturalmedicine

Hives are the common name for the condition called urticaria, which is usually caused by an allergic reaction in the body.  Hives are a skin rash characterized by raised pale red bumps on the skin that are itchy.  They can be both acute or chronic, depending on the cause.

Hives are frequently caused by allergic reactions; however, there are many nonallergic causes. Most cases of hives lasting less than six weeks (acute urticaria) are the result of an allergic trigger. Chronic urticaria (hives lasting longer than six weeks) is rarely due to an allergy.

The majority of chronic hives cases have an unknown (idiopathic) cause. In perhaps as many as 30–40% of patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria, it is caused by an autoimmune reaction. Acute viral infection is another common cause of acute urticaria (viralexanthem). Less common causes of hives include friction, pressure, temperature extremes, exercise, and sunlight. (source)

Fortunately, we have antihistamines that we can use to treat hives and other allergic reactions.  But antihistamines can bring their own problems, the side effects of which range from sleepiness to just plain feeling weird (that’s a technical term I like to use.)  And really, an antihistamine is useful, but doesn’t have to be the only treatment you use.

Natural Acne Solution: Raw Honey (PLUS a Oatmeal Honey Yogurt Facial)

oatmeal honey yogurt facial acne

In spite of eating a real food diet, I have still struggled with my fair share of skin blemishes.  And as a teenager, while I was admittedly eating non-real-food, I had a big problem with acne, like many people nowadays!

I wish when I was younger that I knew how simple it was to take care of acne without buying everything under the sun that was sold in the acne section of the grocery store.  And I definitely wish that I didn’t go to a dermatologist and use a variety of drugs to clear up the problem.  Sometimes simple raw honey will do.  And if you want to be fancy, you can add a little oatmeal and yogurt to the mix.

Either way, raw honey will help your skin feel much happier, and look better too! [Read more…]

Quick No-Fuss Homemade Vapor Rub

homemade vapo rub

Have you seen all those homemade vapor rub recipes on Pinterest and floating around the internet?  So have I!  Some are simple, and others take a little time to put together.

If you are like me, then you will mean to make vapor rub ahead of time to have on hand, but then it won’t be until you are actually sick that you make some.  Homemade vaporub is awesome, but it’s hard to remember to plan ahead, sometimes!

Ahem.  Not that that’s what happened today or anything.

Anyways, the point is this: homemade vapor rub doesn’t have to be hard to whip up!  I literally got a small bowl, put a few tablespoons of coconut oil into it and added 4 different essential oils.  That’s it! [Read more…]

4 Ways to Treat Croup at Home

mullein infusion croup

Last week, we had a croupy cough sneak it’s way into our house.  You know that sound?  Like a little baby seal barking?  That is how I know we have the croup.

Fortunately, croup generally sounds worse than it is.  The barking cough sounds terrible, and it does not help that the cough itself tends to act up in the middle of the night when you may be worried about your breathing, or the breathing of your child!  But rest assured that most cases do not require emergency care.  In fact, even conventional health websites admit that home treatment is most effective. (source)

So when the croup hits your house, what should you do?  There are several remedies you can use, including a humble little herb called mullein. [Read more…]

Bitters & Soda: A Traditional Digestif

Bitters and Soda: A Traditional Digestif | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS #bitters #cocktails #DIY #alkaseltzer #pepto

Think of bitters and soda as natural pepto bism*l, or natural alka-seltz*r.  They were made for your body.  They are crafted from natural ingredients.  So for that over-the-counter stuff, and make a Bitters & Soda instead!

I have been using my homemade bitters as a settling tonic for any upset tummies at my house, especially during our bouts with colds and flus.  Sometimes I have a glass of bitters and soda before I go to bed, and then I sleep like a baby.

While traditional cocktail bitters are making a comeback in local artisan bars, most people still only use them from a storebought bottle for the occasional drink, if they use them at all!  I think bitters are shamefully underused, especially as a part of digestive health.  That’s why I wrote Real Cocktails, because I think we need to bring them back! 10 Ways to Reduce Stress Naturally

Have trouble sleeping?  Find yourself stressing out during the day, holding tension in your neck or grinding your teeth?  Do you have belly fat, and feel fatigued?  Stress may be the culprit you need to find and banish.

I have worked to manage stress ever since I was a child.  I think that I knew on a gut level that I had an anxiety disorder, and that living through abuse was triggering me into a “fight or flight” state more often than was healthy. [Read more…]
