Headaches can present in a kaleidoscope of ways, and the underlying causes can be even more numerous.  There are cluster headaches, tension headaches, migraines, and more, not to mention more rare forms like chronic or exercise headaches, plus secondary headaches that branch out from an underlying condition like an infection, or panic attacks (source). But the variety of possible types and causes can be boiled down to one common root: headaches are painful.

And depending on the type of headache and the underlying cause, you can sometimes find relief with the simplest of natural remedies before you ever have to reach for a bottle of acetaminophen or make a doctor’s appointment. Why go through all that trouble when a simple pinch of salt, capsule of probiotics, or a few drops of essential oil will do the trick?  My philosophy is that when faced with an ailment, natural remedies should be the first course of action to consider.

If you followed my Anti-Diet Challenge last year, you’ll remember that there were a lot of casseroles and a lot of potatoes.  Some of you may have even thought I was crazy.  I mean, I was eating to satiation, and sometimes even beyond, which I did consciously for the benefit of my metabolism.

Confused yet?

I know it’s counter-intuitive, but yes, I am telling you that my Anti-Diet Challenge (this year and last year) is based on the idea of eating more.  Or more specifically, enough.  Not restricting.  Not punishing.

And yes, even working out less (in some cases).   I spent most of 2012 and 2013 refeeding my body, gaining weight, sleeping, and getting my waking body temperature to a steady 98 degrees every morning.  Eventually my weight stopped climbing, and I reached a homeostasis at about 280 pounds.  As I slept more, I found that I had more energy to get myself to the gym, in spite of the fact that I felt really uncomfortable in my larger body.  I lifted a lot of weights.  I started walking and dancing again.  I continued to eat about 3,000 calories/day.  I started to lose weight.

Now we come to January 2014.  I am in the middle of a divorce, of forging a new life where I am a single parent.  This should be a stressful time.  It has been.  But have I gained weight?  Even though I haven’t been to the gym in over two months?  NO.

Surprised?  Even I have been, a little!

120 Days In. (Life Happens. Keep Going.)

And now I have a 120 day update for you:

Sometimes life happens and you don’t do things perfectly.  And then you have a choice: give up or keep going.  I choose to keep going.

Things can fall apart.  Things can change.  And they do!

Maybe you get thrown a curveball and you are thinking “Wow! I didn’t see that coming!”  Or maybe you did see it coming, and now it’s here.

Life is about being accountable for yourself.  It’s about owning up to reality.  Who you are.  What actions you choose to take.  It’s basically about owning you, no matter what.

And the same goes for me.  So I am choosing to keep going.  I choose not to give up. [Read more…]

Poutine is quite simple: fries, brown gravy, and cheese curds.  Simply delicious!  Poutine is comfort at it’s best, full of satisfying starches from the potatoes, a salty edge from the cheese curds, and velvety homemade gravy full of naturally occurring gelatin.

I think of poutine as one of those dishes that is a cross between bar food and an elegantly elevated dish.  But no matter how you classify it, it is full of nourishing fats if you use the best ingredients possible: grassfed cheese curds, homemade gravy with beef bone broth, and organic potatoes fried in coconut oil.

Hives are the common name for the condition called urticaria, which is usually caused by an allergic reaction in the body.  Hives are a skin rash characterized by raised pale red bumps on the skin that are itchy.  They can be both acute or chronic, depending on the cause.

Hives are frequently caused by allergic reactions; however, there are many nonallergic causes. Most cases of hives lasting less than six weeks (acute urticaria) are the result of an allergic trigger. Chronic urticaria (hives lasting longer than six weeks) is rarely due to an allergy.

The majority of chronic hives cases have an unknown (idiopathic) cause. In perhaps as many as 30–40% of patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria, it is caused by an autoimmune reaction. Acute viral infection is another common cause of acute urticaria (viralexanthem). Less common causes of hives include friction, pressure, temperature extremes, exercise, and sunlight. (source)

Fortunately, we have antihistamines that we can use to treat hives and other allergic reactions.  But antihistamines can bring their own problems, the side effects of which range from sleepiness to just plain feeling weird (that’s a technical term I like to use.)  And really, an antihistamine is useful, but doesn’t have to be the only treatment you use.

I have been through a lot in the past year.

I stopped restricting my diet.  I gained more than 50 pounds because of it.  I saw my temperature soar as my energy came roaring back to life.  (That’s just how it goes when you start eating the food.)

And then I saw myself lose it all when I had a breakdown and crisis that pushed me back into treatment for my PTSD related to the abuse and trauma I hadn’t resolved from my childhood.  My temperature dropped again, my energy disappeared, I couldn’t sleep, I shut myself off from people, and I gained more weight.

But then, I saw a glimmer.  I saw myself climb out of the hole.  I was tenderly rebuilt by friends, family, and my truly amazing therapist.  I asked for support from the people who loved me, and they stood with me.   [Read more…]

10 Reasons Not to Work Out

nopeBelieve it or not, sometimes it is a really, really bad idea to work out.  First I said that carbs were not evil, and now this.  I know.  I am just breaking all the health rules, huh?  I will say this though: I’m doing it for my health.

It’s a controversial idea these days to eat carbs and skip the workout.  I mean, practically everyone will tell you that they are allergic to wheat as they eat low carb meals with nary a starch in sight.  And everyone knows that working out is good for you, right?

Living with a Pedophile: My Story of Trauma and Metabolism



(Trigger warning for violence, sexual, physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse.)

I am an abuse survivor.  When I was a child, I was exposed to a pedophile.  Then the pedophile used my body repeatedly, rendering me psychologically injured and scared.  He managed to engage me, groom me, and then use me.  When he stopped assaulting me the fourth time, he terrified me so much that I never told a soul until I was in college seeing my first counselor.  I was 20.

I used to count 4 instances of abuse on one hand, but have since been able to see that abuse is more than just the assault itself.  I was assaulted four times, but I was abused far more often as I lived with the constant stressor of social and sexual deviance in my home life.  It still makes my mind into a bit of a pretzel when I think of it in this new way, but I’m practicing and it gets easier each time.

So now, instead of saying “I was sexually abused 4 times”, I simply say that I lived with a pedophile who used my body.  He used me sexually when he groped me, but he also used me in a myriad of other ways.  He manipulated me, he intimidated me, he lied to me, and many other unhealthy, hurtful things.
